Golfito is a small but beautiful town port that stretches out along the Golfo Dulce. The town was built on by the United Fruit Company  who moved its regional headquarters here in the '30s then in the 1980s, declining markets, rising taxes, worker unrest and banana diseases forced the company’s departure.
In an attempt to boost the region’s economy, the federal government built a duty-free facility, the so-called Deposito Libre Comercial de Golfito, this shopping center attracts Ticos from around the country.
But Golfito also has a lot to offer for nature lovers, the verdant slopes of the Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Golfito surround the town, providing a picturesque backdrop to the crumbling buildings, some of the tours you can do are Dolphin and whale watching tours in the Glfo Dulce Bay, also Snorkeling, kayacking and sportfishing, then if you preffer to spend your time in the rainforest there are Canopy tours, horseback riding and hiking tours in the Piedras Blancas National Park, hiking tours to the waterfalls and rappeling.
